  1. Brown onions in frying pan. Add to Crockpot.
  2. Mix mutton with flour and starred (*) ingredients. Pan fry meat in batches, till browned. Add to Crockpot.
  3. Now add pearl barley, and veg, plus enough water to just cover everything. Set Crockpot on high for 4 hours or until meat and veg is tender. Stir in the gravy. Add additional salt/ pepper/herbs if needed.
  4. DUMPLINGS: First mix flour with salt and herbs. Then drizzle in the olive oil, and mix till it looks loose and crumbly. Then carefully add just enough milk to make a soft dough. Do not over-mix. Take spoonfuls and drop into the bubbling stew and cook for 20mins till double in size.

Remove chicken from broth; allow to cool. Debone chicken and cut into chunks; return to broth. These drop dumplings are the perfect finishing touch for a hearty chicken or beef stew. While it may seem daunting to make dumplings from scratch, it only requires a few ingredients and is just as easy as using biscuit mix. This recipe calls for all-purpose flour, so there's no need to have self-rising flour on hand.
