Halloumi is a fabulous semi-firm cheese from Cyprus and a favorite in Greek cooking. It's similar to mozzarella in texture, but it is brined which imparts a salty taste and greater depth of flavor. This is an excellent grilling cheese because it doesn't melt.

The ingredients needed to make Fried halloumi:
  1. Make ready 250 g halloumi cheese
  2. Make ready 20 g plain flour
  3. Get 50 g breadcrumbs
  4. Take 3/4 tsp dried oregano (or mixed herbs)
  5. Make ready 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper
  6. Take 1 egg
  7. Take oil for frying sunflower/vegetable as required

I've been playing around with the Mediterranean diet lately, trying to make more and more of our meals focused on grains and vegetables. To make the fried halloumi, mix the flour, za'atar and garlic powder in a shallow bowl or on a plate. Heat enough oil to cover the base of a large frying pan over a medium-high heat.

  1. Cut your halloumi into slices roughly 1cm thick. - Pour the flour onto a plate, add the halloumi slices and toss until well coated. - Tip the breadcrumbs onto another plate and mix with the dried herbs & the black pepper. - Whisk egg well into another bowl. - Add the floured halloumi a slice at a time and coat with the egg and immediately placing into the breadcrumb mixture.
  2. Pour the oil into a small frying pan and heat on a medium heat. - Test the oil by adding a crust of bread, if it froths and bubbles and the bread turns golden in 30 secs it is ready. - Add the slices of halloumi, frying them in small batches of two or three at a time. - Fry for about 30 second or until golden brown and the breadcrumbs are crisp.
  3. Place some kitchen roll onto a plate, and using a slotted spoon gently lift out the fried cheese slices and place on the kitchen paper towel to drain off some of the oil. - Serve immediately with sweet chilli sauce, garlic mayonnaise & salad.

Pan Fried Greek Cheese Alternative Serving Suggestions. This is a Delia Smith recipe and one of my favorite starters or lunch dish. It is supposed to serve four but in our house it serves two! The only thing I have changed over the years is that I leave out the salt from the flour, to season the flour I use some ground pepper and I have added some oregano to it. That's okay, halloumi is also amazing popped under the broiler or fried over high heat in a skillet.
